Autogyros

Within our fixed-wing community, members who love autogyros share photos, flight stories and technical discussions about this unique category of aircraft.

An autogyro is a type of rotary-wing aircraft that uses an unpowered rotor in autorotation to develop lift. Autogyros take off and land like a helicopter but rely on an engine-powered propeller or fan for forward thrust during cruising flight.

Popular Autogyros:

• Airplane Factory S-21 Slick

• Auto Gyro MTOsport

• Magni Gyro M-16 Club

• RotorWay Exec 162F

• TG-14 Club

• Xtreme Air XA42

Members discuss:

• Performance advantages – Autogyros tend to have a higher cruise speed, longer range and higher ceiling than helicopters.

• Ease of flight – Autogyros are considered simpler and easier to fly than helicopters.

• Maintenance – The rotor system requires little upkeep compared to a helicopter main rotor.

• Cost – Autogyros tend to be less expensive to purchase and operate versus helicopters.

• Challenges – Members discuss crosswind considerations, noise levels and other limitations.

We celebrate the unique flight characteristics, simplicity and joy of operating these fun lightweight aircraft that combine aspects of both fixed-wing planes and rotary-wing helicopters.
